Sickle cell anemia is an inherited red blood cell disorder caused by a mutation in the HBB gene. It affects hemoglobin structure, leading to sickle-shaped red blood cells. Sickle cell anemia results in chronic anemia, pain crises, and vascular complications, which can be life-threatening.
