Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)

Progressive LV dilatation, wall thinning, and reduction in contractility induced surgically or with doxorubicin.
LV hypertrophy is generally succeeded by dilation, fibrosis, and death.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) - Readouts & Application

Readouts:

Valve regurgitation, ejection fraction, LV wall thickness and volumes
Pressure-volume loops of the left ventricle
NT-pro-BNP plasma levels
Histopathological examination

Application:

One in 33 patients in the US will be affected by cardiomyopathy in the next decade. All will progress to heart failure, with a 50% five-year survival rate. Pediatric patients born with congenital heart defects are expected to age with progressive cardiac dysfunction.
