The Wessler model is widely utilized to explore the impact of novel medications on the prevention of venous thrombosis. Traditionally, the stasis model has been conducted in rabbits; however, it is feasible to induce experimental venous thrombosis in various animal species.
Venous Stasis - Methodology
Under deep anesthesia thrombus formation is induced by the intravenous injection of known thrombogenic agents. Two loose ligations around the jugular vein are then tighten and stasis is maintained for 15 min.
Venous Stasis - Readouts & Application
Readouts:
Thrombus scoring
Thrombus weight
Bleeding time
Platelet aggregation
Thromboelastogram
Application:
This model is perfectly suited to assess thrombogenicity efficacy of pharmaceutical agents or to assess its safety.
